intro |
Olive text indicates a specimen that has not been
thoroughly examined (for example, for microscopic details) and marks other places in the text
where data is missing or uncertain. The following material is based on molecular research of Dr. L. V. Kudzma and other original research of R. E. Tulloss
pileus | 36 mm wide, gray-brown in two of three to four zones, paler (ca. 10YR 6/4) in remaining zone(s), in one specimen becoming ochraceous in bruised area near margin, tacky, subshiny; context white to off-white, sordid in disc, 2 mm thick above stipe,narrowing evenly until 2 - 3 mm from margin, then membranous to margin; margin nonappendiculate, striate (0.15-0.2R); universal veil absent.
lamellae | free, without decurrent tooth on stipe, close to subcrowded, cream in mass, unchanging, off-white to very pale cream in side view, 1.5 - 2.5 mm broad; lamellulae truncate, plentiful, unevenly distributed, of widely varying lengths.
stipe | 79 × 8 mm, white, becoming grayish from handling, narrowing upward, barely or not flarng at apex, with short rounded projection on base, pulverulent in topmost 20 mm, fibrillose and finely striatulate below; context hollow, off-white to pale brownish white, with insect tunnels not observed, with central cylinder 4 mm wide and lined with white cottony fibrils; exannulate; universal veil probably as white cupulate volva at stipe base, with multiple warts or small patches distributed from on lower stipe, white at first, becoming gray, ca. 1 mm thick.
odor/taste | Odor faintly of decay. Taste not recorded.
macrochemical tests |
none recorded. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
partial veil | absent. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
lamella edge tissue | sterile.
basidiospores | ??; color in deposit not recorded.
ecology | Solitary. New Jersey: In loam of lawn under Quercus rubra after 36 hours of soaking rain. New York: In Sand Barrens with Pinus rigida and Quercus scrub. Pennsylvania: In humus of mixed woods with Quercus and Prunus.

discussion |
This species might be confused with such taxa as
A.
rhacopus, A. texasorora, or
A. sp-V03;
however it differs from these taxa
by having three to four pigmentation zones on the
pileus. Because of the zonate pileus, this species might be confused with similarly colored A. sp-N30. This species was briefly called "Amanita sp-rhacopus01" in RET's notes.

Each spore data set is intended to comprise a set of measurements from a single specimen made by a single observer; and explanations prepared for this site talk about specimen-observer pairs associated with each data set. Combining more data into a single data set is non-optimal because it obscures observer differences (which may be valuable for instructional purposes, for example) and may obscure instances in which a single collection inadvertently contains a mixture of taxa.
